Books that you need to read!
I am the kind of person who struggles to focus on one thing for long, unless it captures my heart and ignites something within me. It must be something that completely immerses me, blending into my very being and filling me with a radiant joy. For me, that something is often found in the pages of a good book.
I love a good book. To me, a good book is one that carries the heart and soul of its author, where words overflow with genuine emotion, bringing a sense of fulfillment and self-discovery. Such books reveal the layers of people, instilling sympathy and maturity through well-crafted characters and meaningful stories. If I’m investing my time, I want a book that offers insights and fuels my brain, or simply makes me feel good.
I avoid dark, pessimistic themes. I prefer books that entertain while also provoking thought and leaving a lasting impression. I’m a picky reader, just getting started on my journey, and after reading around 150 books (though I didn’t finish all), I’ve learned that I despise boring books that go nowhere.
These are my top picks, chosen because they inspire and uplift. So, let’s get started in no particular order:
1. The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga
This book is a game-changer! It helps you realize that every problem we face boils down to interpersonal issues. You can’t control everything, and you don’t need to! If you feel insecure, let others affect your mood, or absorb their energy, this book will show you how to break free from that cycle.
2. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
This one’s a must-read fiction gem! Not only is it a great escape into a world filled with fascinating characters and plots, but it also gives you a deep understanding of people, the situations life throws at us, and most importantly, about love and all its forms. This book is like a warm hug in literary form. A little tip: don’t start with this one if you’re new to fiction because it sets the bar so high that other books might not feel as satisfying afterward.
3. The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Although the title sounds philosophical, this short book can be finished in one sitting and answers all of life’s big questions. It covers everything from love and marriage to children, work, freedom, and death. It’s full of profound insights that make you reflect on life, journal your thoughts, and question your beliefs. Each time you read it, you’ll find something new to understand and appreciate. The wisdom you gain from this book makes it an invaluable read. The Prophet is a timeless guide that will enrich your life and leave you thinking long after you’ve finished it.
4. The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter — And How to Make the Most of Them Now by Meg Jay
If you’re in your 20s, or really any age, this book is packed with practical advice on how to make the most of your life. Whether you’re focusing on social improvements, career growth, or relationships, this book provides great ideas to help you navigate it all. Juggling these aspects can be tough, but The Defining Decade offers clear and actionable guidance to make things easier and more manageable. It’s a must-read for anyone looking to improve their life and make the most of their current phase.
5. Foster by Claire Keegan
Yet another short book that I love! Short books often pack a deeper meaning, and this one is no exception. Foster tells the story of an orphan girl who gets a new home, but it’s not as simple as it sounds. It’s sweet, emotional, and provides a deep understanding of the lives of people in foster care.
6. Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson
If you’re into starting your own business or need inspiration to get started, Rework is the book for you. It’s filled with smart advice for making a business successful. It’s short but packed with so many insights that I found myself highlighting almost every page. Follow its advice, and you’ll find it makes so much sense.
7. We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Don’t let the title fool you — this is a book everyone should read. It’s the only feminist book that I felt everyone would appreciate. It offers a clear, accessible perspective on feminism that is relatable and enlightening.
8. Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty… And Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, And Unapologetically Being Yourself by Dr. Aziz Gazipura
If you’re a people pleaser, YOU NEED TO READ THIS. Even if you’re not, give it a read because we all tend to please others at times. It’s a great guide to stop pleasing everyone and start being unapologetically yourself.
9. And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman
This book made me smile and feel sentimental at the same time. It’s about a grandfather, his son, and his grandson, filled with memories and heartwarming moments. It reminds us to make time for creating memories with loved ones before things change.
10. Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss
This is a children’s book, but it’s equally enjoyable and meaningful for adults. Give it a go — it only takes about 10 minutes to read, and you’ll find its message uplifting and inspiring.
